Our homes are where most of us spend the vast majority of our time but it is an area of our lives that, because we usually associate it with comfort and security, is often neglected or not given enough thought, not only in terms of fire safety but often safety generally. Yet for what is a relatively small amount of money we can make our homes and families so much safer by purchasing a few simple items to help protect ourselves.
The most basic components of assisting us with fire safety in the home are:
- Smoke Alarms
- Portable Fire Extinguishers
- Fire Blankets
There are other ways of providing fire safety but some can be outside of many people's budget or difficult to install if not installed in a new property, such as sprinkler systems. However, the basic items mentioned above are a very good starting point in fire prevention in the home.
For the majority of homes (for larger properties see below) general purpose dry powder or foam fire extinguishers are normally adequate. Our 1kg Dry Powder, 2kg Dry Powder and 2 Litre Foam fire extinguishers are excellent choices for use in the home.
In larger properties it may be wise to place additional fire extinguishers around the home and our 6 Litre Water and 9 Litre Water fire extinguishers would be suitable additional choices for you.
A fire blanket can be a better choice when dealing with a cooking pan fire and can be placed directly over the source of the fire.
Remember that smoke alarms should be tested on a weekly basis to check that they still work and batteries replaced regularly. In addition all fire equipment should be regularly inspected.
Remember that smoke alarms should be tested on a weekly basis to check that they still work and batteries replaced regularly. In addition all fire equipment should be regularly inspected. Although not a requirement in a strictly private dwelling, it is our recommendation that you have your fire extinguishers and equipment serviced and inspected on a regular basis by a competent person. We would be glad to provide this service if it's within our service area but can provide you with names of businesses if not. Information cannot be provided as a personal recommendation but will be a member of one of our fire association bodies.
If you require any further advice regarding fire extinguishers please contact us and we'll do our best to help you decide what you need.
