Portable fire extinguishers for use on boats

Fire safety when boatingYou should ensure that your boat has suitable fire-fighting equipment on board that will enable you to respond to a small fire and minimise the risk of a fire getting out of control and enable you and your passengers to escape safely.

Many factors need consideration when using portable fire extinguishers on a boat such as appropriate numbers and types of fire extinguisher, the condition of the fire extinguisher and ensuring that they are properly certified. In certain situations a fire blanket may be a more appropriate means of dealing with a fire on a boat such as dealing with a cooking pan fire.

In addition to portable fire fighting equipment carried on your boat, you should also look at means of escape and, in particular, that accommodation areas have at least two possible means of escape. Also, everyone on board should be made aware of the locations of fire-fighting equipment, how to use them and where all the escape points are. These areas should be the key points in your 'Fire Action Plan' and everyone on board should be made aware of it.
