First Aid Burns and Eyewash Kits

Does your organisation need to have First Aid Kits, Burns Kits and Emergency Eyewash Kits?

Your First Aid Kits, Burns Kits & Emergency Eyewash Kits requirements will depend upon what type of organisation you run and will be directed by, for example, the number of employees you have, number of vehicles and many other factors.

Businesses and most organisations that employ people would need to carry out a first aid needs risk assessment and then any first aid provision should be driven by the results of that assessment.

The Health & Safety Executive website has the following information on its site with regard to what a first aid box at work should contain:

What are the First Aid requirements at work?

As a guide, where work activities involve low hazards, a minimum stock of first-aid items might be:

  • a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid, for example, the Health & Safety Executive's website provides a lot of useful on first aid at work;
  • 20 individually wrapped sterile plasters (assorted sizes), appropriate to the type
    of work (hypoallergenic plasters can be provided if necessary);
  • two sterile eye pads;
  • two individually wrapped triangular bandages, preferably sterile;
  • six safety pins;
  • two large sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings;
  • six medium-sized sterile individually wrapped unmedicated wound dressings;
  • at least three pairs of disposable gloves.

We suggest that you make yourself familiar with the first aid information available at the HSE site, if you are not already familiar, and what your obligations are. You may also have health and safety consultants or some other reputable source to guide you.

For additional information please the Health & Safety Executive website, First Aid at Work pages.

A first aid box is also a wise thing to keep at home.

Remember to replace any items that are used and, if the contents are used in a work situation, you may need to have a policy in place whereby an Accident Report is completed and you should get appropriate advice on this area.
