Fire blanket

Fire blankets are a useful piece of fire equipment to have in your business, workplace or home.

If you are purchasing fire blankets you should ensure that they conform to British Standard BS EN 1869:2019 and are suitably labelled to confirm this.

Always buy fire equipment from a reputable supplier.

Where and when to use Fire Blankets

  • Fire blankets are mainly used in kitchens where they can be used to smother fires caused by fat and cooking oil when using frying pans & deep fat fryers, for example.
  • They can also be used to wrap around people if clothing is on fire.Fire blanket
  • You should always follow the instructions that are displayed on the fire blanket's container. The vast majority of fire blankets, other than those manufactured for specialised uses, are not reusable and have to be disposed of if ever they are used.
  • Ideally, you should make yourself familiar with all instructions on fire fighting & fire prevention equipment in your premises so that you are aware of how to use it when needed.
  • When dealing with fat & cooking oil fires, and in the event that you do not have any fire blankets, you should cover the fire with a damp cloth, do not attempt to put the fire out with water.
  • You should also try to isolate the heat source, if it is safe to do so.
